ACTIVITIES & EXCURSION
The best of the crop include the Museum Puri Lukisan; the oldest art museum in the town which specializes in modern traditional Balinese paintings and wood carvings, and Ubud’s Neka Gallery. Other must-sees are the Neka Museum in Campuhan, the Agung Rai Gallery in Peliatan, and the Agung Rai Museum in Pengosekan where the difference between creative art and more commercial output quickly becomes apparent. Not to be missed is the Seniwati Gallery – Art By Women - founded in 1991 by Mary Northmore (wife of the famous Javanese painter Abdul Azis) to help Balinese women in their battle to be accepted as artists in their own right. The gallery showcases the long-neglected brilliance of Bali’s resident female artists and encourages other young Balinese women to develop their own creative gifts. Less than 30 km from the resort is the fascinating artist’s town of Ubud, undoubtedly the cultural heart of Bali. Comprised of 14 villages, each with its own creative specialty, Ubud is the place to visit for leading art, dance and music performances as well as the legendary Wayang Kulit shadow puppet theatre. Within 40Km of the resort is the magnificent Hindu sea temple Tanah Lot or "Land (in the) Sea" in Balinese. Sitting on a large offshore rock whose shape has been fashioned out of waves dating back more than 500 years, the temple is claimed to be the work of the 15th-century priest Nirartha and has been an important part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven such structures dotted around the Balinese coast each one established within sight of the next to form an intriguing ‘chain’ along the island’s south-western coast. Within 46km of the resort, the Pura Luhur Uluwatu, whose name derives from three old words: "Luhur" meaning something of divine origin, "Ulu;" (land's end) and "watu" or rock, is one of Bali’s sacred directional temples (kayangan jagat) and has great spiritual significance to the Balinese people. Another of the seven magnificent sea temples to be found on Bali, it commands a wonderful view of the sea breaking against the cliffs and offers hauntingly-beautiful sunsets. The most compelling part of the temple complex, however, comes from its nightly kecak and fire dance performances. "Kecak" is derived from an old Balinese ritual called the sanghyang – a trance dance driven by repetitive chanting. In its ancient form, the sanghyang communicated the wishes of the gods or the ancestors. Is a village on the western edge of the larger caldera wall of Gunung Batur in Bali, Indonesia.
