ACTIVITIES & EXCURSION
A gentle drive through the beautiful Al Maha Desert Resort landscape gives you the unique opportunity to get close up sightings and photographs of the free-roaming wildlife in the reserve. Feel the surge of adrenalin as you put your Arabian horse through its paces whilst taking in the infinite beauty of the desert landscape. With numerous species of flora and fauna indigenous to the Al Maha desert reserve, amateur biologists and botanists will enjoy the guided nature walks led by our experienced Field Guides. For a thrilling adventure, a four-wheel drive Desert Safari can quickly transport you to some of the more isolated parts of desert outside of the Al Maha reserve. A ten minute drive into the conservation area to a grove of Ghaf trees. Wander around our desert “forest” while your guide tells you more about these fascinating life-giving trees. For the more adventurous, the dune drive offers a more extreme and exciting 4X4 drive through the sand dunes.
Experience the power of our 4X4 vehicles while your highly trained guide puts their vehicle through its paces. Half way through the drive your guide will stop on one of the high vantage points to allow you to enjoy the spectacular scenery and the soft sand under your feet.
The vehicles travel in convoy for safety reasons and the guides carry satellite phones, radios and all the necessary safety equipment. Part of the fun of the dune drive is the ‘digging out’ should one of the vehicles become stuck.
Since Al Maha is a conservation reserve, this activity is conducted outside the reserve in the larger dunes situated close by. Your Field Guide will be happy to give you a lesson in the noble art of archery, which features heavily in the heritage of Middle Eastern and Bedouin culture.
Under shelter of palm leaves you will see the target in the distance, at the base of a high dune very close by to Al Maha resort.
Donning the protective glove and arm guard, your Guide will demonstrate how it’s done before the contest begins. Things usually get quite competitive, so it is well worth taking time to wield and master this age-old weapon that captures the skill and patience of a bygone era. The falcon is one of the enduring symbols of the region. Of critical importance to the survival of nomadic Bedouin people, falconry remains an integral part of Emirati culture, dating back more than 2,000 years and recognised as the sport of nobility.
Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa has 7 falcons. Most are bred or crossbred especially for their speed, colour and hunting agility, while others are rescued birds, cared for and nursed back to health. The Desert Eagle Owl and Tawny Eagle both native to the UAE are also in residence.
If you wake up early at dawn you may witness these majestic birds exhibiting their speed and agility.
A short walk down a dune close to the main resort takes you out to a sight where the falcons are already quietly waiting on their perhers. You’ll notice the tiny leather hoods they wear, which keep their eyes covered and temporarily remove 80 percent of their senses, so they keep calm and content.
You can enjoy a warming hot drink or refreshingly cold drink in the dew of dawn as each Guide discusses the breed and character of their birds before encouraging them to fly. It is worth noting that all of our birds are kept ‘wild’. It is only through the careful balance of a food-based relationship with their carer do the birds choose to fly at all. These birds are quite capable of flying off at any time (sometimes they do), but they will remain successful hunters for the remainder of their lives.
The speed and natural hunting instincts of each bird are beautifully displayed and there are opportunities for close up photographs and inspections during this amazing and memorable experience. Camels are an integral part of life in Al Maha Desert Resort. They arrived in Arabia from Africa 2,000 years ago, introduced by the original nomadic herders. We have our own camels on site, cared for by an expert team who ensure that these creatures also enjoy 5* facilities.
Rising into the air on a camel for the first time is unlikely to be forgotten and, sitting atop one of these strangely lovely creatures, you’ll soon adopt the gentle rocking motion. Experience tells us that a 25 minute ride out into the distant dunes is sufficient for most first-time riders. Your Field Guide will be happy to arrange longer and more strenuous rides if you wish.
You’ll take a leisurely ride out to the crest of a dune, from which you’ll see the sun setting across the desert whilst enjoying Champagne, snacks and fruits. Make sure you watch closely, as this spectacle takes place surprisingly quickly, with light changing by the second. It is fantastic and exclusive experiences like this “sundowner” that make Al Maha one of the most loved and best spa resorts in Dubai.
After remounting, you’ll ride back in the fading light towards the lights and canopies of the Resort, your journey ending near the resort’s beautifully lit main swimming pool.
Just inside the main entrance of the hotel is “The Gallery”, our inviting resort shop where a wide range of original artifacts, gifts and souvenirs can be found. It is an interesting array of antiques, carpets, jewellery and rare antique weaponry, all of which are sourced locally from within the region.
The Gallery is the only gift shop within the resort, selling objects like Artworks, Rugs and Antiques, which are also on display throughout the resort and in the private suites. Many of these unique display items are also available for purchase in the gallery. The Gallery sells a further selection of locally sourced Handicrafts , Gifts, high quality Persian, Caucasian & Kashmiri rugs, handcrafted furniture, Arabian Artifacts, Islamic Art and traditional Khanjars (Omani knives).
